It was the day for the official bedding in of the "new line" - otherwise known as the course with no name, which is the treacherous devil-child of some of Cannock's top riders such as Adam H, Dave C, and Elliot M. From the fast and flowy start through the tight and technical, over the drops and through the breakneck finish, it makes for one helluva minute or so. And it was made much more devious by that blue blob, which had visited the night before to add a nice layer of slime. Tough, yes. Fun, oh yeah.

Mark Milward, fresh off his National Champs 1st place win and Worlds 3rd place, was looking like easy money for the fastest time. Keeping speed on this course was no easy matter, which suited Marks hard charging style, pedalling every inch he can. But it was Greg H, interestingly a guy with a similar pedally style, that would nip him with a fantastic 55.7 second run for the fastest time of the day. Based on the BUM chart, it would appear that Greg might just be the fastest man on the hill, and that has caught the eye of a potential sponsor for Greg for next year, but I'll keep my lips sealed about that one...

2nd fastest Mark M putting far too much trust in his tyres

Adam H and Dave C had super fast times as well, and Dave was one of the few people to fully clear the swamp gap at the bottom. From the finish line I counted about 6 people who gave it a go only to case it and loose valuable speed at the finish. Needless to say, most only tried it once, especially Peter G, who hadn't walked the final length of the course and, to my terror, rode right off the gap at half speed disappearing into the swamp nearly head first!

Peter G, on rocks at Cannock? Blimey what next?

Updated - We actually had 6 Under 15s, not 4. Newcomer Jack Terry (who forgot to sign in) took the fastest time from Sam Hopkins - not a bad start! It was looking like Ben Hardwick was going to school them all on his hardtail, nailing the drops with great finesse - until I found out that he was actually 15 and would have to play with the big boys! For the record, only two guys were brave enough to ride hardtails down this monster, the other being Ali W in the Under 15s. Sam H did his usual best and took 2nd fastest, with Will W and Elliot G on his tail. Joe E rounded out the pack, and was smiling all day even not having had the chance to really practice the course.

Sam H, fastest Under 15 and leading the series.

Even though the new line is one of the shorter courses, times were quite long due to the technical difficulty and mud, which didn't necessarily bog as it did sap. We had around 60 riders, with £36 in the donation tin - not quite enough to cover the medic, so don't forget your pocket change next time!

The Beat Steve Peat event is less than 3 weeks away now, and I'm really excited. Got the custom number plates in the mail today and they awesome. Peaty's bringing 5 mates down with him and we're all gonna have a good time for a good cause. There are still spots remaining, so click if you haven't signed up yet and get to it! We much prefer to have local RG guys get the spots than people from further afield, which is starting to happen since the coverage on Pinkbike and Descent World. We're expecting more coverage in the coming weeks as well.

Click here for more of Tom's pics on Pinkbike. And check out Ian's awesome video from the day below and see for yourself how much fun the course is!
