Fundraising?

We've set a target of raising £3,000 for Stephen Murray through the Athlete Recovery Fund.  We don't expect you to fork over and additional £40 to £90 of your own money, we expect you to go to friends and family and ask for donations for this charity event.

How to do the fundraising?  Ask family, friends, relatives, work colleaugues and school friends.  Read Stephen's story below and watch the video so you can explain where their money is going.  There are two ways for you to collect money:

1. Once again, it is best if you use www.firstgiving.com/racersguild as all money is collected online and will go directly to the Stephen Murray fund.

2. The old fashioned way, by collecting cash or checks.  Bring all your donations on Nov 15!

Downloadable forms to help with your fundraising:

    Hints and Tips (Word .doc)

Checks payable to who?

Online donations or cash is preferred over checks.  Because we are just a grassroots organization, we do not have a bank account.  Therefore, checks will have to be made out to one of the organizer's personal accounts (i.e. Aaron Neumann), which we will cash and then donate on your behalf to the fund.

Important Dates:

Sept 14:  Registration opens via all 3 methods.  RG timed practice day.
Oct 26:  RG timed practice.  You will be able to register or give funds raised to the organizers.
Oct 26:  Registration opens for the general public.
  Nov 15:  The big day!

Stephen Murray Tribute
Worth watching for so many reasons...

The Stephen Murray Story (copied from www.stephenmurraybmx.com)

June 22, 2007 marked a day that the Action Sports World will remember for a life time. A day that has forever changed the life of Professional BMX Dirt Jumper & three times U.S. Gold Medalist Stephen Murray.

In the midst of doing a double back-flip, Stephen Murray crashed while competing in the BMX Dirt Finals at the Dew Actions Sports Tour, in Baltimore, Maryland. It was quoted as being "one of the worst crashes seen in bmx" one that would ultimately be career ending, for this incredibility talented, 27 year old athlete.

Stephen was transported to University of Maryland Medical Centre Shock Trauma Unit. He had flat lined in the ambulance and again after reaching Shock Trauma, where medication was administered to bring him back.

Undergoing the first of two 7 hour surgeries, Doctors confirmed Stephen had crushed his 3, 4 and 5 cervical vertebrae, suffered severe damage to his spinal cord and the front of his vertebrae had been shattered.  Stephen Murray, professional athlete, husband, father of two young boys, now paralyzed from the shoulders down. His Mother & Father confide; "initially it wasn't the news of Stephen being paralyzed that frightened us, but if "Our Stephen" would make it through the night".
Stephen Murray moved the United States from Newcastle, Great Britain over 10 years ago with a dream of riding & competing with the best athletes in the sport. His goals set high, to achieve what no one had yet accomplished. He did just that, in 2001 and 2002 winning Gold Medals in BMX Dirt Jumping at the X Games and Back to Back Gold at the Gravity Games in the same year. He would continue on winning numerous titles & medals throughout his professional bmx career.

Stephen fought his way to the top of his sport; he would fight to breath, to stay alive. He continues his fight today; to one day hold his wife and children and …to one day walk again.

A web site & fund has been set up in efforts to help provide awareness & financial support. For more information how to get involved with the Stephen Murray Fund please visit:  www.stephenmurrayfamilyfund.com  www.myspace.com/murraystrong

Who is Steve Peat?

I do hope you don't have to ask yourself that question!

But if you don't know, Steve Peat is the 6 foot 3, three time World Cup Champion "King of Downhill" from Sheffield, England.  He is quite simply one of the best mountain bikers on earth, and to see him ride is a revelation of speed and skill at an entirely different level.

But more than that, Peaty is a great guy, instantly likeable by anyone.  He is down to earth and has time for everyone.  While he is a consumate professional when he needs to be, he's fun loving character the rest of the time and a committed family man at home.

He is a fantastic ambassador for the sport of downhill, from giving back through the mentoring of young riders such as Bryceland, Beaumont, and Fairclough to giving to great causes through charity events such as the Wharncliffe Weekender and this one.

Once you've met Peaty, you'll be a fan for life!
